Christmas Music... Commercialism?

This year they began playing Christmas music on the radio a week before Thanksgiving. Usually, they officially begin the day after Thanksgiving. Christmas decorations and merchandise were also sold in stores the day after Halloween... Right next to the leftover Halloween candy (poor, dejected candy...).

Is this too early? Too much commercialism and marketing so soon? Do we need to pull in the reigns or is this acceptable since it does happen only once a year and it's amazing anyways?

Please reply with thoughts and comments then I will post my own :)

  1. I am exceptionally good at getting in fights about this with people. The after Thanksgiving idea makes sense, but it only gives you a month to be excited about Christmas. So I start listening to Christmas music whenever I feel like it, and that's usually in October.

  2. Nowadays, many of the big stores make 40 to 60 percent of their profit in the Christmas time. Why shouldn’t they try to extend this time for them? A store is a business; they have to sell what the people want. However, they couldn’t start to sell the Christmas stuff after Halloween, if nobody would buy it. In my opinion, this is not their fault. Everybody should begin with Christmas when he wants. Nevertheless, a lot of the people have forgotten what Christmas is really about. Would they remember when all starts after Thanksgiving? Probably not.
As far as I concern, the commercialism of Christmas is a result of forgetting what Christmas is about, but not the reason for forgetting it.
How can we remind the people? And, is this only a question about Christmas? Or can we see withnthis example, how much commercialism everywhere in our life is and what’s important to the people?

  3. Personally, I love Christmas.
I get excited when they play Christmas music on the radio.
Also, I personally look forward to Christmas all year long because it usually means that the whole family will be together.

While you and your sisters still live at home, both my brother an I moved out when we started college so we Christmas is pretty much all we really have to be together. This situation is pretty similar for very many people in the world.

I think you are very blessed to be with your whole family while you're going to college. =)
